Doctors across India have gone on a 24-hour national strike to protest the brutal rape and murder of a female colleague in Kolkata. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for the shutdown of non-essential hospital services, while emergency and casualty services continue to run.

The strike is a response to the killing of a 31-year-old trainee doctor, whose body was found with extensive injuries in a seminar hall at R G Kar Medical College. A volunteer has been arrested in connection with the crime, which has sparked widespread outrage and protests.

The IMA has demanded better protection for medical staff, increased security at hospitals, and safe spaces for rest. They have also called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of those involved in vandalizing the hospital.

Protests have been held across India, with tens of thousands of women participating in the Reclaim the Night march in West Bengal, demanding freedom and safety. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised swift punishment for those guilty of “monstrous behavior” against women.
