Immigration officers stationed at Hevi, an unapproved route in the Akatsi North District, have intercepted three booklets of ballot papers during a routine monitoring exercise in the Ave Havi area. The suspect, Abraham Ahiabu, who serves as the NDC Constituency Secretary for Akatsi North, was apprehended while transporting the ballots en route to Vodome in neighbouring Togo.
Each booklet contained 1,000 ballots, totalling 3,000. During initial questioning, Ahiabu claimed the ballots were meant to educate voters in Vodome on how to cast their votes. However, his explanation has sparked controversy, especially as he later revealed possessing an additional 20,000 ballot booklets.
The use of an unapproved route, commonly linked to cross-border irregularities, has heightened suspicions regarding the intended purpose of the ballots. Many have questioned why Ghanaian ballots would be used for voter education in Togo, particularly so close to Ghana’s elections.
These developments have raised allegations of potential attempts to enable foreign participation in Ghana’s electoral process.
Ahiabu has since been handed over to the Ghana Police Service at the Akatsi North District headquarters for further investigation. The seized ballot booklets have been transferred to the District Electoral Commission for authentication.
Authorities have assured the public of a thorough investigation to safeguard the integrity of Ghana’s electoral system and address the concerns surrounding this incident.
