In order to concentrate on his humanitarian efforts, Asamoah Gyan, a former captain of the Black Stars, has renounced his membership in the New Patriotic Party.
Ghana’s record goalscorer said he has not been fair to the country’s youth by being associated with a political party in a statement published on his social media handle on X (formerly Twitter). He will now be stepping back from active politics to concentrate on independently supporting the Asamoah Gyan Foundation, which aims to empower the youth of Ghana.
The 2010 BBC African Footballer of the Year was named head of Bawumia’s Youth and Sports Manifesto subcommittee in February 2024, a few weeks after Gyan was observed at the NPP Presidential Candidate and Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,’s campaign launch.
He accompanied the vice president on a campaign stroll in the Eastern Region’s Akropong last month.
However, the 38-year-old Gyan claimed in the statement that he will no longer be taking part in partizan work going ahead since his acts have not been fair to the young of Ghana.
“I haven’t treated Ghanaians and their youth fairly. I will not be associated with any political party going forward. I’ll keep up my charitable activities and do what little I can to support Ghana’s youth. Nothing pertaining to politics. I hope that the elections on December 7th will be calm for all political parties. God bless Ghana, our country. “Thank you,” Gyan wrote in addition to the message.
