Madam Marbel Ofosu, Assistant Headmistress in charge of Academics at Mampong School for Deaf and Dumb, has made a heartfelt appeal for urgent attention to the school’s sanitation and infrastructure challenges. In an exclusive interview, she highlighted the dire consequences of inadequate sanitation facilities, which have led to frequent illnesses among students due to an environment contaminated with waste from the school’s dumping site.
Madam Ofosu emphasized the need for proper sanitation facilities, including waste bins and containers, to promote health, prevent pollution, and reduce the risk of diseases among students and teachers. She stressed that the current situation makes it difficult for the special students to live and study in a conducive environment, hindering their development and academic performance.
Furthermore, Madam Ofosu lamented that the school’s infrastructure is not disability-friendly, despite being built for persons with disabilities. She noted that even the current headmaster is a victim of this situation, highlighting the urgent need for intervention.
Madam Ofosu appealed to the government, corporate organizations, NGOs, and Zoomlion to provide the necessary support, including waste bins, sanitation containers, and disability-friendly infrastructure, to address these challenges.
In a related development, Ghana Insurers Association (GIA) donated items worth thousands of cedis to the school, aiming to complement government provisions and promote insurance awareness. CEO Dr. Kingsley Kwesi Kwabahson expressed optimism that the donation would make the school’s operations easier and encourage financial planning among the students and staff.
The plight of Mampong School for Deaf and Dumb highlights the need for collective action to address the challenges faced by special schools in Ghana, ensuring that students receive a conducive learning environment and equal opportunities for development.
