Gunmen block Bolgatanga-Tamale highway, killing eight travellers in deadly attack

Gunmen ambushed the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway near Gbimsi, a village close to Walewale, on Sunday, killing eight travellers. The attackers erected roadblocks in Gbimsi and Walewale, interrogating passengers and setting two vehicles ablaze.

A survivor of the ordeal described the attack, saying, “I was traveling from Sunyani to Paga when we encountered roadblocks where people were being hunted and killed. The incident lasted over an hour without any security intervention.”

The attack is believed to be linked to the resurgence of the Bawku conflict, raising serious concerns about safety along the highway.

In response, the Ghana Police Service announced an intensified security operation along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale route and surrounding areas. Police and military units have been deployed to manage traffic and ensure public safety. Authorities assured the public of their commitment to maintaining peace and order in Bawku and its environs.
