Guinness Ghana, WaterAid Ghana bring potable water to Nadowli, Nandom

Over 100,000 people in the Nadowli and Nandom communities in the Upper West Region now have access to clean drinking water following a major intervention by Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC and WaterAid Ghana.

Through the construction of Small-Town Water Systems (STWSs), the two organisations have provided a reliable water supply, expected to produce more than 200,000 cubic meters of water every year – over 78,000 cubic meters in Nadowli and 125,000 in Nandom.

That would supplement existing water sources and ease long-standing water challenges in those areas.

The project, funded by Guinness Ghana under its “Water for Life” initiative, is part of its broader “Spirit of Progress” sustainability strategy aimed at replenishing water used in its operations and giving back to communities.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Nadowli, Ms. Ewurabena Yanyi-Akofur, the Country Director of WaterAid Ghana, emphasised the importance of partnerships in delivering safe drinking water.

She thanked the Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly, the chiefs and people of Nadowli, the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), Interplast Limited, and all other stakeholders that played a role in making the project a success.

On her part, Ms. Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah, the Corporate Relations Director at Guinness Ghana, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to solving water access issues in vulnerable communities.

“In the past five years alone, we have commissioned 13 water systems across the country, most of them in the Upper East and Upper West Regions.

“Our goal is simple, to help improve the livelihoods of these communities and ensure healthcare facilities have clean water to support the treatment of pregnant women and other vulnerable groups,” she said.

Ms. Owusu-Ankomah added that Guinness Ghana was intentional about its site selection.

He said: “We are supporting communities where we also source local raw materials like sorghum and maize.”

“It’s a way to ensure our impact is felt in areas where our supply chain begins.”

With Guinness Ghana celebrating its 65th anniversary in 2025, Ms. Owusu-Ankomah assured the communities of the company’s ongoing commitment to building partnerships that made a difference.

The Nadowli Health Centre has also been connected to the new water system, ensuring a consistent water supply that would improve healthcare delivery, infection prevention, and hygiene standards at the facility.

Mr. Cornelius Ziekye, the Sub-District In-Charge at the Nadowli Health Centre, expressed appreciation to both organisations, noting that the water system had solved a major problem.

“We used to rely on the CWSA water supply, but there were times we went up to two weeks without water.

We had to buy from private vendors or use boreholes, which affected how we cared for patients,” he explained.

Mr. Rashid Mumuni, the Deputy Coordinating Director of the Nadowli-Kaleo District also thanked WaterAid Ghana and Guinness Ghana as the intervention would ease the water burden on residents.

A 15-member committee had been constituted to help manage and maintain the facility in Nadowli in partnership with the CWSA to ensure its sustainability.
