Gomoa West NDC Chair, 2 Others Granted Bail

Gomoa West NDC Chair, Alhaji Mohammed Kassim, and two others, Stephen Cobbinah and Joseph Mensah, have been granted bail by the Cape Court Circuit Court 1, presided over by Her Honour Veronique Praba Tetteh. The trio faces four charges: provocation to riot, riot, riot with an offensive weapon, and offensive conduct.

The bail conditions are as follows:

– Alhaji Mohammed Kassim: GH₵20,000 and one surety
– Stephen Cobbinah and Joseph Mensah: GH₵10,000 each and a surety each

Their troubles began when NDC supporters, led by Alhaji Kassim, stormed a ceremony to commission DRIP machines for road construction in the district. They took issue with the display of posters featuring Bismark Basie Nkum, the District Chief Executive and NPP’s Gomoa West parliamentary candidate, on state equipment. The confrontation turned violent, with some individuals beaten and others stabbed.

At the court hearing, the defendants’ lawyers requested bail and asked for the case to be referred to the court-connected Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) program. The court granted the request, scheduling the next hearing for October 18.

Eric Offei, a lawyer for the accused, expressed gratitude to the court and cautioned NDC youth to avoid violence as the elections approach.
