GMA condemns reckless use of fishing vessels for passenger transport

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has condemned the reckless use of fishing vessels in the transportation of passengers at Anyanui in the Volta Region as shown in a viral video.

The GMA, in a statement, noted that the authority has observed with grave concern a video circulating on social media depicting market women being transported as passengers on a fishing canoe en route to the Anyanui market in the Volta Region.

“The Authority condemns this act in the strongest possible terms, as it represents a clear disregard for safety regulations and a reckless endangerment of human life.”

It added that this incident was particularly alarming in the wake of the recent canoe accident that claimed 16 lives in the Oti Region, especially as the GMA had intensified efforts to ensure compliance with safety protocols on Ghana’s waterways.

It urged the public to note that fishing boats, canoes, and vessels were certified for fishing activities only, stressing that “They are strictly prohibited from being used for any other commercial activities, including the transport of passengers.”

The GMA emphasised that the use of certified life jackets was compulsory for all persons aboard any boat or canoe on Ghana’s waters, regardless of the distance of travel.

“The video suggests a complete failure to observe this non-negotiable safety standard. The Ghana Maritime Authority is working tirelessly to enhance safety on all Ghanaian waters.”

It urged people living along coastal and inland water areas whose transport activities relied on water transport, as well as community leaders, to support the GMA’s agenda of compliance and safe water transport.
