Miss Gloria Jubi, the Founder of the Glomacx Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) Initiatives, has called for the inclusion of STEAM education in basic school curriculum.
With that, she said school children would develop the interest to learn the subject and equip themselves with the essential skills and to pursue STEAM as a life career.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, Ms Jubi early exposure to STEAM concepts would further empower children with practical, creative, and problem-solving abilities of the technology-driven world.
“STEAM should be integrated into the curriculum at the earliest stages of learning and with that school children will be introduced to foundational concepts in computer sciences like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, robotics, and genetic programming”, she advocated.
Ms Jubi, also an author, said a solid STEAM foundation would open the thinking faculties of children, and thereby enhance their analytical and creative thinking skills too.
She said STEAM transcended textbook education, enabled young minds to question, experiment, design solutions, and communicate ideas through technology and creativity.
“It’s not just for future scientists or engineers, it is a mind-set every child should cultivate”, Ms Jubi stated, and saying Glomacx believed that integrating STEAM at the basic level education curriculum would demystify complex scientific and mathematical concepts.
That would reduce the fear of pursuing technical subjects, and open doors for more girls to offer science and technology subjects.
Ms Jubi said with the global job market rapidly shifting towards digital and design-oriented careers, it was imperative to assist and encourage children to develop the interest in STEAM education in their early stages.
“It will be too late to wait until they reach Senior High School before we introduce them to STEAM education”, she stated and called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to promote the formation of STEAM clubs in basic schools too.
Ms Jubi said she had authored five books on STEAM, covering Computer Science, Information Systems, Informatics, Web Analytics, and Millennial Fashion Revolution for Senior High Schools and Universities.
