-Ghana’s national phygital basketball team is set to participate in this year’s Games of the Future tournament scheduled for December 17 to 24 in the United Arab Emirates.
The tournament, which blends physical sport with digital gaming, is expected to host over 100 nations and attract more than 2,000 spectators at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.
Ghana’s delegation, represented by four experienced players and three officials, is brimming with confidence ahead of the global event which carries a $400,000 prize purse.
The phygital basketball discipline, known as “Phygital Basketball. 3on3 FreeStyle,” pits twoplayer clubs against each other in two weighted stages: a digital round played on the latest licensed version of “3on3 FreeStyle: Rebound” and a physical 2on2 match on a standard 3×3 court.
Scores from the digital stage carry over to the physical stage, with the combined total deciding the winner.
The format demands both sharp esports strategy and athletic skill, making it a true test of a new breed of hybrid athletes.
Mr. Igor Boumekpo, President of GESF, revealed that Ghana has earned a rare spot as one of only two African countries selected to compete in phygital basketball this year.
He thanked the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and National Sports Authority for pledging to support the team’s trip to Abu Dhabi.
The Ghana Esports federation’s partnership with the World Phygital Community further strengthens Ghana’s foothold in this emerging sporting arena.
With over Sixteen (16) teams participating, Ghana has been scheduled to take on USA in their opening encounter.
