The Ghana Police Service has issued a stern warning against vigilantism in the upcoming election year. According to ASP Oscar Attah Yeboah, Crime Officer for Suhum, the police will not tolerate any self-appointed vigilante groups and will take action against those who attempt to disrupt the peace.
Addressing stakeholders and political parties at a dialogue meeting in Suhum, ASP Attah Yeboah challenged the youth to desist from joining such illegal groups, which are often affiliated with political parties. He emphasized that the police will not sit idly by like a dog with teeth that cannot bite, but will instead take decisive action against anyone who seeks to destroy the peace.
The Electoral Commission (EC) Chair for Suhum, Moses Adawe Zimwura, also cautioned against violence during the elections, noting that in extreme cases, military intervention may be necessary, as seen in countries like Niger, Burkina Faso, and Angola. However, he emphasized that such a scenario is undesirable in Ghana.
The EC has opened its doors to stakeholders and the public to observe its activities and ensure transparency. Meanwhile, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has established an Inter-Party Dialogue Committee to promote peaceful elections and political stability. The committee aims to foster collaboration among political parties, stakeholders, and citizens to address electoral concerns and mitigate potential conflicts.
