Ahead of the 2024 general elections coming off on the 7th of December, the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has officially backed the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The move was as a result of the disqualification of GFP presidential candidate, Philip Appiah Kubi, also known as Romana Fada, by the Electoral Commission (EC).
Kubi’s candidacy was annulled due to irregularities and errors in his presidential nomination forms, following the sudden death of GFP’s initial presidential candidate, Akua Donkor.
At a press conference on Wednesday, December 4, GFP Secretary-General Jerry Addo explained that the party took the decision to support the NDC after extensive consultations with its leadership.
Addo cited the NDC’s policies, particularly its plans to establish a women’s development bank and to waive the payment of registration fees for first-year tertiary students, as key factors influencing support for the GFP. “The Ghana Freedom Party supports the candidacy of the flag bearer H.E. John Dramani Mahama on Saturday [December 7].
He will take power to save Ghanaians. And here I want to say, and it is a fact, that no one forced us, no one influenced us to make this decision.
“We have critically examined the manifestos and policies of various political parties, including independent candidates.
That is why we have to take this decision very late. Because we only have today [Wednesday] until Saturday. It wasn’t easy, we consulted widely. And you see, our mother, the [late] candidate, had women at heart.
“And the NDC campaign policy was to establish the Women’s Development Bank, which was something vital to our mother, why don’t you follow that path? “Our mother did not receive any formal education and NDC promises free higher education for the youth, including the physically disabled. This is a policy that our mother wanted. The policies and vision of the NDC are in line with those of the Ghana Freedom Party.”
