The Ghana Armed Forces athletics team delighted the crowd with a blistering performance at this year’s Accra Athletics Championship, held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
The security side managed to clinch eight gold, five silver and four bronze medals to end their campaign with the most medals at the event.
The Championship, held on Saturday, May 17, featured over 600 athletes from six regions who competed in various disciplines.
On the field, Ismael Arthur, Ghana’s long distance-ace, stepped up to secure gold in the men’s 5000m event as he overpowered some familiar foes.
The excitement continued for Otchere Mensah who showed much power and commitment in the Long Jump event to top the chart whereas Bugase Rexford also settled on gold in the men’s discus event.
Elsewhere, Teye Gabriel Asare, Mammoudu Baba and Abotsi Daniel announced their presence and gave a showdown in the Javelin, 400m hurdle and 1500m events to increase the medal haul of Ghana Armed Forces.
In the shot-put event, Abali Rosemond clinched the top spot for Army while Adombila Saraphina also earned gold in the 800m event.
The likes of Solomon Diafo, Coffie Albert, Ocansey Kennedy and some other big names contributed their quota to give the giants a successful campaign in this year’s Athletics Championship.
Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, Vice President, Ghana Athletics, speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency showered praises on the Army team for their impressive performance.
He urged that despite the readiness shown by the athletes, it was important to improve upon their performances to represent Ghana at various international competitions.
“These athletes are ready for any competition that is ahead of them. We have mentioned that we have upcoming competitions, juniors in Nigeria and seniors, so we are hoping that we will get more athletes to compete for the individual race,” he said.
The Ghana Athletics has announced that its National Championship will be coming off August this year.
