The Ghana Football Association (GFA) met with the leaders of Premier League clubs’ Supporters Groups to discuss match-day safety and security standards.
This meeting was called in response to the unfortunate murder of Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Nana Yaw Frimpong, also known as Nana Pooley, at Nana Koronmansah Park in Nsoatre last week.
Mr. Prosper Harrison Addo, who convened the meeting, spoke with supporters about a number of topics, including appropriate fan behaviour, conflict resolution strategies, and stadium police protection.
During the discussion, many supporter groups provided input and proposals for improving the safety and security standards.
The GFA and the supporter groups agreed to begin training and educating supporters about the existing restrictions and safety measures.
The Supporters Group also resolved to launch a “No Hooliganism” campaign, emphasising the importance of fan decorum during matches.
The Safety and Security Committee of the GFA took the meeting through the new initiatives from the Ghana Police Service to enhance safety and security at match venues.
The GFA also updated the groups on the actions taken to find justice for Francis Nana Yaw Frimpong and that the GFA is treating the death as a criminal offence, so it is fully in the hands of the police service.
The supporters’ groups present at the meeting were Accra Hearts of Oak, Accra Lions, Aduana FC, Bibiani Gold Stars, Kpando Heart of Lions, Bechem United, Nations FC, Medeama SC, Basake Holy Stars, and Vision FC.
Others include Nsoatreman FC, Karela United, Legon Cities, Dreams FC, Young Apostles, FC Samartex 1996, and Berekum Chelsea.
The meeting urged the police to continue in their quest to find justice for Francis Nana Yaw Frimpong. The groups also committed to support and work with the GFA and the security service to ensure safety and security at match venues.
The GFA and the Supporters Groups resolved to meet periodically to discuss and exchange ideas to further enhance safety at match venues.
