From Mahama to Akufo-Addo, the UGCC opposed Ghana’s independence and said, “You can’t rewrite our history.

President Akufo-Addo has come under fire from former president John Dramani Mahama for remarks he made over the weekend.

This came after the President emphasized that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was not the only person to build Ghana in his speech to the people on August 3.
According to the President, he fully opposes “the notion that Ghana was founded by one man.”

“Whilst Kwame Nkrumah undoubtedly played a significant role in our nation’s independence, we must recognize that many generations of people worked together to achieve our country’s freedom.”

In response, Mr. Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s past is already widely recognized.

“We will all adhere to our history, which we are all aware of. I swear to you, once we are elected, we will reset everything,” he continued.

He went on to say that J.B. Danquah was a member of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), which has a history of opposing Ghana’s independence movement.

“The same folks who petitioned the Queen of England back then and opposed our independence. The members of the UGCC that Akufo-Addo belongs to were against Ghana’s independence. Thus, he is unable to come and change history,” the NDC presidential candidate for 2024 stated.

Context

A statute designating August 4 as Founders’ Day was passed by Parliament in 2019 in recognition of the efforts made by all those involved in Ghana’s journey toward independence.

In addition, this law declared September 21 to be Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day in order to honor Nkrumah’s accomplishments.

There were objections against the creation of Founders’ Day from certain people and organizations who thought Nkrumah had a unique role in building the nation.

Some detractors contend that Dr. Nkrumah’s leadership was essential and should be acknowledged exclusively.
