Friday, July 4 declared Republic Day holiday in lieu of Tuesday

The President has declared Friday, July 4, 2025, as a public holiday to be observed nationwide in for Republic Day, which falls on Tuesday, July 1.

A statement issued by the Ministry of the Interior, and signed by the sector Minister, Mr Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, said the declaration of Friday, July 4, as a public holiday was made by the President through Executive Instrument (E.I), in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2021 (Act 601).

The measure aims to improve productivity and allow for extended weekends without losing the significance of national observances.

The statement, issued on Friday, June 27, urged the public to take note and observe the day accordingly.

Republic Day commemorates Ghana’s transition to a republic in 1960, after gaining political independence from Britain in 1957.

The day was previously observed as a statutory public holiday until 2019, when the Public Holidays (Amendment) Act reclassified it as a commemorative day.

The day was thus recognised but no longer a public holiday.

However, President John Dramani Mahama announced on May 4 that the Day would be reinstated as a statutory public holiday.

He made the announcement during the 2025 Supernatural Empowerment Summit, held at the Perez Chapel in Accra, describing July 1 as “a moment of deep historical and spiritual significance for the nation.”
