The fourth Mindsports Scholastic Chess Competition over the weekend ended at the Accra International Conference Centre with Ghana’s brightest young minds battling it out for chess supremacy.
The event, which attracted hundreds of participants, saw players battle it out in the U-8, U-10 and U-14 categories as Alarcon Santiago, Ibrahim Abubakar, Sachin Raja, Emmanuel Garbrah and Julien Morton stole the show at the end of the day.
Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, newly appointed Director General of the National Sports Authority speaking at the event said he was impressed with the level of exceptionalism shown by the participants.
He commended Mindsport Ghana and the Ghana Chess Association for promoting chess as a vital part of Ghana’s sports development.
“Mindsports Ghana has done an excellent job in promoting chess among our youth. “I am impressed by the talent and dedication displayed by these young players, and I look forward to seeing them represent Ghana in international competitions,” he said.
Mr. Ampofo said this was the right time to promote chess since Ghana was taking a turn in developing least financed sports.
He charged the winners to put in more effort in their career to win more medals for Ghana at international competitions.
