The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged former President John Dramani Mahama to uphold electoral rules and focus on his policies as he seeks re-election. Speaking during Mahama’s courtesy visit to the Manhyia Palace on December 3, 2024, Otumfuo emphasized the importance of peaceful elections, stating that leadership is determined by God and the people’s choice, not by force or violence.
“Elections are not about violence. Everyone should vote peacefully and allow their agents to sign after results are counted. If we abide by these standards, God will reveal the rightful leader. If God does not crown you king and you want to use force, it will not work,” Otumfuo remarked.
He also advised Mahama to use the remaining campaign days to explain his policies and plans, particularly for the Ashanti Region, adding, “We pray for him and bless him, that whatever he seeks, God should provide.”
In response, Mahama refuted allegations that he plans to cancel the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy if elected, describing the claims as lies propagated by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“Otumfuo, you know me; I don’t lie. The claims that we will cancel Free SHS are baseless. There is no truth in them,” Mahama said.
He accused the NPP of neglecting development in the Ashanti Region despite the party’s strong support there. Mahama assured the Asantehene of his commitment to addressing the region’s development needs and sought blessings for his vision to reset Ghana’s trajectory towards growth and prosperity.
