An inferno that broke out on Sunday, June 15, 2025, around 0518 hours, completely consumed five container shops at a road opposite the University of Education, Winneba, North Campus.
No causalities were recorded; however, a printing press shop with a lot of gadgets running into several thousands of Ghana Cedis was among the stores.
According to ADO I. Dery Vitus, Public Relations Officer of the Effutu Directorate of the Ghana National Service, the office received a telephone call from of the Service’s officials, reporting fire outbreak gate.
“Immediately, a crew was dispatched to the scene at 0608 hours and on their arrival, observed that containers used as a provision, fruits, phones and phone accessories shops, a boutique and a printing press were all on the fully developed fire.
It took officers an hour and a half to douse the fire to prevent it from spreading to the other shops.
DOI Dery urged residents of Winneba and its surrounding communities to observe fundamental fire safety measures to avoid man-made fire disasters.
He said failure to put out fire after cooking, not replacing old electrical wires and leaving lighted candles to burn off in the rooms, keeping petroleum products in bedrooms and stores, were the major factors that contributed to fire outbreaks.
He also asked them to quickly call personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service, who have been trained to fight fire when it occurred.
ADO 1 Dery, consoled the victims of the disaster and urged the public against delaying in reporting such incidents in their localities until they got out of control.
