Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid was ejected from his team’s game against the San Antonio Spurs (111-106) after confronting an official.
Referee Jenna Schroeder called Embiid a third foul when he tackled Victor Wembanyama, knocking the Frenchman to the ground with two minutes, 59 seconds left in the first half.
The 76ers player argued with Schroeder and then had to be restrained by the official after removing his face mask and continuing his protests, leading to two technical fouls and his ejection.
Earlier, Schroeder’s decision to eject Philadelphia’s Andre Drummond for two technical fouls after a challenge on Wembanyama was overturned.
“It was a crazy first half,” 76ers coach Nick Nurse said. Tyrese Maxey scored 32 points, had 10 rebounds and eight assists to lead Philadelphia to the victory, while Wembanyama had 26 points, nine rebounds and eight blocks.
Elsewhere, the defending NBA champion Boston Celtics, who led by 15 points in the first half, suffered a 108-104 loss to the Orlando Magic.
Tristan da Silva scored 18 points for Orlando against a Celtics team without Jayson Tatum, who was out sick.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had an impressive 41 points to help the Western Conference leaders, the Oklahoma City Thunder, win 123-105 over the Washington Wizards.
