Ghana is taking a significant step towards sustainable fishing practices with the introduction of solar-powered outboard motors. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, announced that the government will launch these eco-friendly motors in October ¹.
A Solution to Premix Fuel Challenges
The artisanal fisheries sector has long struggled with the exorbitant cost, shortage, and smuggling of premix fuel. The solar-powered motors aim to alleviate these issues, providing fishers with a reliable and affordable alternative.
Pilot Program in Elmina
The motors will be piloted in Elmina, in the Central Region’s Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem constituency. During this phase, fishers will receive training on operating the new machines. Dr. Bawumia emphasized that the solar-powered outboard motors will be sold on hire purchase, making them accessible to more fishers.
Benefits of Solar-Powered Motors
– Renewable Energy: Harnessing solar power reduces dependence on fossil fuels and mitigates environmental impacts.
– Cost-Effective: Lower operational costs for fishers, improving their livelihoods.
– Increased Efficiency: Reliable and consistent power supply for fishing operations.
Dr. Bawumia aptly noted, “You will no longer need premix anymore because God will give it to you every day with the sun.” This innovative solution has the potential to transform the fishing industry in Ghana.
