Electric vehicles and tax reforms ahead of December elections – Dr. Bawumia

Vice President and flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, announced the government’s plan to introduce electric vehicles into the country as part of an initiative to reduce transportation costs.

Speaking at a gathering in Akropong, Eastern Region, over the weekend, Dr. Bawumia stated that the introduction of electric vehicles could lower the cost of public transportation by at least 40% and reduce emissions. The government aims to transition from diesel, gas, and petrol to electric vehicles, including one-wheelers, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers, to support public transport.

“We are shifting from oil and gas dependence to electric power. The introduction of these electric vehicles will precede the December election, with estimates already completed. This initiative will significantly decrease public transportation costs,” Dr. Bawumia asserted.

In addition, Dr. Bawumia outlined plans to revise the tax regime to support businesses. He proposed a new flat-rate tax policy of 10% for all businesses, similar to Estonia’s model, allowing for a straightforward calculation of tax liability and reducing the burden from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). He also mentioned a tax amnesty for businesses and individuals, ensuring that no one owes the GRA before the new initiative takes effect next year.
