Election 2024: The Catholic Bishops’ Conference calls on the European Commission to maintain legality and impartiality

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) of Ghana has released a communiqué urging all parties to guarantee a peaceful, transparent, and equitable voting process as the country gets closer to the general elections on December 7.

“It is crucial that the Commission ensures that all electoral processes are carried out impartially and in accordance with the law,” the Bishops said, emphasizing the responsibility of the Electoral Commission (EC).

The GCBC called on the EC to carry out its duties in a fair and transparent manner, to be in constant contact with interested parties, and to promptly and openly address any issues pertaining to the election process.

The Bishops emphasized the need for impartiality and honesty in all of the EC’s activities, even as they expressed confidence in the organization’s capacity to fulfill its mandate.

The Influence of the Media on Public Views

It was noted that the media is essential in influencing public opinion and ensuring that voters are educated.

The Bishops urged media outlets to report with objectivity, balance, and accuracy as part of their responsible journalism practices.

Sensationalism should be avoided, they said, as it could spark conflict or division. Rather, the media need to support the development of an informed and calm electoral atmosphere.

The Judiciary’s Role in Protecting the Law

It was requested that the judiciary maintain its integrity and fairness in enforcing the law, particularly while resolving electoral disputes.

The Bishops called on the courts to resolve disputes with honesty and strict obedience to the rule of law, highlighting the judiciary’s crucial role in upholding public confidence in the democratic process.

Motivating Youth to Participate Positively in Civic Life

In addition, the GCBC made a forceful appeal to Ghana’s young, recognizing their critical role in the country’s present and future.

Young people were urged to take an active role in the political process by abstaining from manipulation to engage in violent or disruptive behavior and by casting their votes responsibly.
The Bishops declared that youth involvement ought to be constructive and helpful, supporting the nation’s democracy.

Leaders from Tradition and Religion as Peace Mediators

The communique also addressed traditional and religious leaders, requesting them to serve as peace mediators on behalf of the Bishops.

The Bishops urged these leaders to promote unity among the nation and ease tensions as it navigates a fiercely contested political landscape.

Their deeds and teachings ought to demonstrate a dedication to peace, rapprochement, and the upholding of the fabric of the country.
The Bishops urged all Ghanaians to carry out their civic responsibilities with honesty and responsibility in their closing statements, reiterating their commitment to preserving peace and stability in the country.

In keeping with their shared commitment to the principles of freedom, justice, and accountability, they called on all parties involved to cooperate in order to guarantee that the 2024 elections be held in an environment of harmony, equity, and respect for one another.
The GCBC expressed their hopes for a peaceful and successful Ghana by reminding everyone of the biblical proclamation, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9).
