Election 2024: NPP urges NDC to reconsider stance on 2024 peace accord for national unity

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to reconsider its decision not to commit to the 2024 peace accord ahead of the December elections, emphasizing the need for national unity.

Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the NDC, reportedly stated in an interview that the party would not sign a peace declaration before the upcoming general elections.

In a statement, the NPP expressed disappointment in these remarks, labeling them as “unfortunate” and “incendiary.” The party condemned the comments, raising concerns that the NDC leadership is fostering an atmosphere of fear and suspicion among its supporters, potentially priming them to reject the results of the 2024 elections.

Signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, the NPP’s statement underscored its commitment to peace and stability in Ghana before, during, and after the elections. The party highlighted its consistent commitment to this cause since the inception of the Fourth Republic, citing its history of signing the Peace Accord in every election since 2008, regardless of its position in government or opposition. The NPP also referenced its actions in 2016 when it signed the Peace Accord despite challenging the results of the 2012 elections in court and questioning the neutrality of the Electoral Commission.
