John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has sharply criticized Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for his recent remarks about the late President John Evans Atta Mills.
In a recently circulated video, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, referred to President Mills as “the one who died,” appearing to forget his name.
This incident comes on the heels of another controversy involving Dr. Prempeh, where, during his introduction as running mate, he ranked President Akufo-Addo above President Kwame Nkrumah and made comments that were widely perceived as disrespectful towards Dr. Nkrumah. He later issued an apology for those remarks.
Speaking at a community engagement in Akatsi North in the Volta Region, Mr. Mahama condemned Dr. Prempeh’s latest comments as unwarranted and disrespectful to the memory of President Mills.
“He can’t hide his arrogance. I was just watching a video yesterday, and he was talking about the past president. He said Rawlings, and he said Kufuor, and somehow he even forgot Professor Mills’ name, and then he said, “That one who died”.
“I mean, how can you talk like this? Very disrespectful, very insulting. Arrogance is like pregnancy. Whatever you do, it will come out,” he said.
“You can insult me because I can respond because I am life, but in our tradition, you don’t say evil things about the dead. You don’t disrespect the dead because they are not alive to respond to you,” the former president added.
