Election 2024: Dr. Bawumia vows to abolish e-levy, betting tax, and implement comprehensive tax reforms

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reaffirmed his commitment to abolish the controversial E-Levy and betting tax if elected President in the 2024 general elections.

He promised that his administration would introduce comprehensive tax reforms to ease the burden on Ghanaians, including a tax amnesty for previous years’ tax payments and waivers for interest and penalties on unfiled taxes.

During the party’s manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday, August 18, Dr. Bawumia outlined strategies to propel Ghana’s growth into a world-class digital economy.

“We will accelerate Ghana’s growth into a world-class digital economy and make Ghana the digital hub of Africa. This will be achieved through policies, competitive incentives, and strategic investments. We will invest in developing local talent and tech start-ups. The E-Levy will be abolished.

We will implement wide-ranging tax reforms, including offering a one-time tax amnesty to all Ghanaians and corporate entities. This will include waiving interest and penalties for unfiled taxes from previous years, allowing everyone to start their tax journey afresh.

We will also reform the Value Added Tax regime by merging all levies into a single line-item levy and treating it as part of input and output VAT, to eliminate the cascading effect in the current system. Additionally, we will reduce Withholding Tax (WHT) for small-scale gold exports to 1% to discourage smuggling and abolish the Betting Tax.”
