Ekon Chief Pleads for Sea Defence Amid Devastating Tidal Waves

Ekon Chief Pleads for Sea Defence Amid Devastating Tidal WavesThe coastal community of Ekon in Cape Coast is facing a dire situation due to persistent tidal waves, and Chief Nana Kwame Edu Ababio is sounding the alarm. He’s calling on the government to construct a sea defense and breakwater to protect the community from the devastating effects of the tidal waves. At the recent Ekon Apayem Festival, Chief Ababio emphasized that this project would bring much-needed relief to the residents, who have lost over 150 structures and several lives to the tidal waves.

The situation is dire, with many families torn apart by the loss of livelihoods. Fishing, the primary source of income for many residents, has become impossible due to the tidal waves. This has led to joblessness and strained relationships, with some marriages even ending in divorce.

Consequences of Inaction:

– Loss of Livelihoods: Fishing, the main source of income, has been severely impacted.
– Destruction of Homes: Over 150 structures have been destroyed by tidal waves.
– Loss of Life: Several lives have been lost, and many residents are physically incapacitated.

Chief Ababio is urging the Minister for Works and Housing, Hon. Kwadwo Oppong Nkrumah, to take immediate action. Previous pleas to local authorities have fallen on deaf ears, and the community is running out of time.

A Call to Action:

The chief’s plea echoes the concerns of other coastal communities in Ghana, where tidal waves have become a recurring problem. It’s time for the government to take concrete steps to address this issue and provide the necessary infrastructure to protect these communities.
