ECOWAS Urges Ghana’s Political Parties to Uphold Electoral Laws

The ECOWAS Commission has called on Ghana’s political actors and stakeholders to adhere to the country’s constitution and electoral laws to ensure transparent and peaceful elections in December. The commission expressed concerns about growing misinformation and disinformation ahead of the general election and emphasized the need for continuous dialogue to prevent electoral violence.

At a three-day training workshop in Accra, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, stressed the importance of peaceful elections in the region. He noted that Ghana has a history of peaceful elections but faces increasing incidents of violence and trust deficits among stakeholders.

The workshop, organized by ECOWAS and the National Peace Council, brought together political parties, security agencies, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to discuss strategies for mitigating electoral violence and promoting inclusive, peaceful, and credible elections.

The ECOWAS Commission reiterated its commitment to supporting Ghana’s democratic efforts and consolidating its gains through peaceful and transparent elections. The National Peace Council’s Executive Secretary, George Amoh, emphasized the importance of dialogue, mediation, and collective commitment to peace and stability.

The Electoral Commission’s Deputy Director, Legal, Florence Mensah, assured participants that the commission would conduct free, fair, credible, and violence-free elections.
