The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially declared Faustina Elikplim Akurugu as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Dome/Kwabenya constituency. This decision follows the resolution of contentious issues surrounding the electoral process.
At an emergency Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa announced that the electoral process in the constituency had concluded. She affirmed that the outcome accurately reflects the will of the voters.
“Today, the Commission is pleased to announce the conclusion of proceedings and collation in the Dome/Kwabenya constituency,” Mensa stated. “We are convinced, beyond a shadow of doubt, that the results represent the people’s choice as expressed during the polls.”
Jean Mensa emphasized that the Commission’s role is to uphold credible and transparent elections, ensuring the people’s mandate is respected. She also detailed the resolution of a key issue at the Abokobi Women’s Training Center polling station, where discrepancies involving a training pink sheet were identified and resolved.
After investigating the matter, the Commission determined that a rerun at the polling station was the fairest course of action. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) agreed to this resolution, while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) initially raised concerns.
Further investigations included reaching out to the presiding officer, who clarified the events surrounding the use of an incorrect pink sheet. Mensa confirmed that the original results from 369 polling stations were accurate, barring the Abokobi polling station issue.
The EC Chairperson dismissed media claims that training sheets were improperly used, reiterating that they were neither signed by party agents nor valid for parliamentary elections.
This declaration concludes a heated contest between the NDC and NPP in the Dome/Kwabenya constituency, affirming the legitimacy of the final results.
