Residents of Adjei-Kojo Suncity at the Tema West Municipality have been left in shock, after a five-year-old girl lost her life on Sunday morning, when the kiosk in which she was sleeping caught fire.
The charred body of the deceased, Yayra Hannah Agbeve, a nursery-two pupil, was conveyed from the scene by the police to the mortuary.
Madam Joyce Agbeve, the mother of the victim, said she was at church when the incident occurred, explaining that the girl who had earlier complained of feeling sleepy left the church, which is located behind the wooden structure to sleep at home.
Madam Agbeve expressed shock at how the other two adjoining kiosks did not get burnt and it was only the one the girl was sleeping in, stating that she does not have an electricity connection or use gas, coils or candles, which could be a possible cause of such fire.
āI donāt know what could have caused the fire; my coal pot is even outside. How come itās only my kiosk that got burnt?ā she said amidst tearsā.
Mr Charles Agyiri, an eyewitness, told the media that they were at church in the neighbourhood when a child ran to them screaming that the sister was on fire in one of the kiosks.
He added that when they rushed to the scene, the fire had already consumed the structure and the girl was burnt beyond recognition inside, noting that even though the Ghana National Fire Service was not informed, the police came around for the body.
Ms Charity Dela Siame, the Assembly Member for Adjei Kojo, has appealed to the Ghana Police Service to investigate the cause of the fire.
She also appealed to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and the Member of Parliament for Tema West, to help provide support to the deceased mother.
MadamĀ Charity Dela Siame, the Assembly Member for Adjei Kojo, who visited the scene, called on the police to thoroughly investigate the circumstances leading to the incident.
Madam Siame also cautioned community members, especially those using gas and residing in wooden structures, to turn off all gadgets before leaving home.
While calling on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Member of Parliament for Tema West to come to the aid of the victim, she also advised parents against leaving their young children unattended to, as that could be dangerous.
