The Democracy Hub protesters who were arrested four days ago have just been denied bail, leaving their family members feeling frustrated and disappointed. To make matters worse, the relatives have also been denied access to see their loved ones, adding to their distress.
The protesters were part of a three-day demonstration organized by the Democracy Hub, which aimed to draw attention to Ghana’s economic crisis and the destruction of water bodies caused by illegal mining activities, also known as GALAMSEY. The protest took place from September 21 to 23, 2023, and saw 49 protesters arrested for allegedly defying a court injunction. However, the protesters claimed they had not been properly served with the injunction.
The Ghana Police Service had filed the injunction against the protest, citing concerns over national security and public order. Despite this, the protesters went ahead with the demonstration, leading to clashes with law enforcement at the 37 Intersection in Accra.
Key Events of the Protest:
– Day 1: Protesters caused disruptions at the 37 Roundabout, prompting swift police intervention.
– Day 2: Oliver Barker-Vormawor, one of the convenors of the Democracy Hub, was seen removing a key from a police vehicle and throwing it away.
– Arrests: 42 protesters are set to be arraigned before court, according to the Ghana Police Service.
The situation is currently under control, with traffic flowing freely. However, the denial of bail and access to their loved ones has added to the family members’ distress.
