Tahiru Danbala, a youth, has been confirmed dead in the latest explosion of violence in Bawku, Upper East Region.
Danbala, a local Forex Bureau trader, was traveling between communities in Bawku when he was fatally shot in the crossfire of a clash that broke out in the area.
Since the resurgence of the conflict last Friday, this incident brings the death toll to 17, including seven women.
The chaos has forced the closure of schools and major businesses as rising tensions pose a threat to lives and livelihoods.
Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival leader who was in exile has returned recently, which has led to the resumption of the long-lived Bawku conflict.
His return, combined with recent attacks targeting travelers, has led to an increase in violent clashes, leading to at least eight more deaths and multiple injuries in recent days.
As a result of this, a curfew was declared from Monday 28 October 2024, restricting travel from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
The move followed an emergency meeting chaired by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and national security officials who stressed the need to strengthen security measures to restore peace in Bawku.
