A District Magistrate Court in Agona Swedru, located in the Central Region, has lifted an injunction that barred Cynthia Morrison from running as an independent parliamentary candidate for the Agona West Constituency.
The injunction, issued earlier, had temporarily prevented Morrison from presenting herself as a candidate pending the resolution of an ongoing legal dispute.
Morrison, who previously won the Agona West parliamentary seat for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2016 and 2020, opted to run independently after alleging unfair treatment during the party’s internal primary for the 2024 elections.
However, the plaintiff, Emmanuel Addison, is contesting her eligibility to represent the constituency, arguing that she resides in the neighbouring Agona East constituency. A similar legal challenge in 2020 was ruled in Morrison’s favor.
The legal team representing Morrison, led by Ishmael Kofi Turkson, has also filed a motion requesting the transfer of the case from the District Magistrate Court to the High Court.
In an interview with Kasapa News’ Yaw Boagyan, Morrison expressed confidence despite the ongoing developments. She mentioned that other individuals are planning to sue her over her tenure as Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, specifically in relation to COVID-19 funds she managed. Morrison said she is fully prepared to respond to any such lawsuits. The court has adjourned the case to October 25, 2024.
