Mr. Gabriel Tanko Kwamigah-Atokple, a member of the Council of State representing the Volta Region, has called for enhanced collaboration between traditional authorities and government structures to accelerate the region’s development.
Speaking at a meeting with the Volta Regional House of Chiefs in Ho on Friday July 18, Mr. Kwamigah-Atokple emphasised the critical role of unity among traditional leaders in amplifying the voices and concerns of the people.
“The Volta Regional House of Chiefs carries significant influence. When we speak with one voice, our concerns are more likely to reach the highest offices and attract the attention they deserve,” he said.
“As your representative on the Council of State, my role becomes most effective when I am supported by a unified and clear message from this House.”
He proposed that the House formally engage the President on three key development priorities:
Volta Harbor Project – A transformative initiative that could position the Volta Region as a strategic hub for trade and transport, creating vast business and employment opportunities.
Ho Aviation Training School, he said Operationalizing this facility, he said, would not only boost technical education but also attract investment, promote innovation, and raise the region’s national profile.
Agricultural Mechanization – With agriculture being the backbone of the region, Mr. Kwamigah-Atokple stressed that modernizing farming methods would significantly enhance productivity, empower youth, ensure food security, and build resilient rural livelihoods.
He expressed gratitude to the President for the recent directive to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, approving a Ghc 30m Chinese grant for the construction of an ultramodern market in Aflao.
“This is a welcome sign of action, and we thank His Excellency for this commitment,” he noted. “It reminds us that clear and consistent advocacy does lead to results.”
Mr. Kwamigah-Atokple urged the House to continue petitioning the government for the delivery of all other pending promises.
“When the harbor, aviation school, and agriculture projects are delivered, we’ll be making tangible progress towards the long-overdue economic autonomy of the Volta Region.”
Quoting Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, he added, “We face neither East nor West, we face forward”—a call for unity, determination, and forward-thinking leadership.
As part of his long-term vision, he also encouraged the House to explore sustainable income-generating ventures to reduce overreliance on government subsidies.
“We must think creatively and build financially viable structures that allow the House to function with dignity and stability,” he said.
Mr. Kwamigah-Atokple pledged to continue advocating for the region’s needs at the national level, ensuring that promises made to the people of Volta are remembered and fulfilled.
The Volta Regional Chairman of the NDC, Mr. Mawutor Agbavitor, also called for peace and unity among chiefs and the people of the region to foster development.
