The Central Tongu District Assembly has commenced construction works on a new road linking the Kopietz community to Kpewu, in a move expected to significantly improve transportation, trade, and access to essential services within the Central Tongu District.
Mr. Dodzi Addison Moniquie, the Central Tongu District Chief Executive (DCE), described the project as a historic milestone for Kpewu, a farming community that has for decades remained without a proper road connection to neighbouring towns.
He noted that the community, known for its production of maize, cassava, and rice, has faced longstanding challenges in transporting produce to markets, with residents often enduring long and difficult journeys to access schools and health facilities.
He explained that the construction has been made possible through strong bilateral cooperation and the active involvement of the local community.
Once completed, the road is expected to ease the movement of goods and people, provide students with improved access to educational institutions, and enable residents, particularly women, to reach markets and healthcare centres more conveniently.
“This road is more than just an infrastructure project; it is a lifeline that will connect Kpewu to opportunity, growth and development,” Mr. Mornyuie said.
He commended the commitment of residents to supporting the works and assured that the Assembly would continue to prioritise projects that directly impact livelihoods and promote socio-economic progress in the district.
The DCE expressed optimism that the Kpoviadzi–Kpewu road, once completed, would also mark the beginning of a new chapter in the community’s development, opening avenues for economic growth and social advancement for generations to come.
Some residents expressed joy at the commencement of the project, noting that the lack of a motorable road had cost farmers in Kpewu substantial losses over the years.
“Sometimes, by the time we carry our cassava and maize to the market, parts of them get spoiled. This road will change everything for us,” he said with a smile.
Madam Akosua Nartey, a trader and mother of three, said the road would make it easier for pregnant women and the sick to reach health facilities nearby.
They lauded the efforts of Mr. Mornyuie, and urged that more development comes to the community under his tenure.
