Conflict in Bawku: Chief Justice directs four courts in the Upper East area to resume immediately

Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo ordered four courts in the Upper East to reopen immediately.

The High Court of Bolgatanga, Circuit Court of Bolgatanga, District Court of Bolgatanga, and District Court of Bongo are among the courts that will reopen.

This decision comes after seven courts in the Bawku township and the surrounding regions were already closed because of recent unrest that resulted in several altercations and fatalities.

Therefore, the Chief Justice issued an order for the closure to “ensure the safety and security of judges, staff, lawyers, and court users.”

The shutdown would continue “until further notice,” she added.

But according to a statement released by the Judicial Secretary on Friday, November 8, the Chief Justice has now “directed the reopening” of four courts for “business, with immediate effect,” based on her previous ruling.

Registrars of the aforementioned courts were also asked to “take note and resume the operations of the Court accordingly,” according to the statement.
