As the world observes World Rabies Day, health experts in Ghana are renewing their call for pet owners to prioritize annual vaccination to prevent the spread of the deadly disease. The theme “Breaking Rabies Boundaries” resonates strongly in the country, where rabies remains a significant public health concern.
Dr. Mabel Abudu, Ashanti Regional Veterinary Officer, stressed that vaccination is crucial for protecting pets and communities. “Rabies is a highly contagious and fatal disease that can be prevented with timely vaccination,” she emphasized. “We urge all pet owners to take responsibility for their animals’ health and ensure they receive annual vaccinations.”
Dr. Eric Sarpong, Atwima Nwabiagya District Health Director, explained that rabies is a viral disease transmitted through animal bites. “If reported early, rabies can be treated,” he noted. “However, delayed reporting often leads to fatal consequences.”
To eliminate rabies by 2030, stakeholders must collaborate. Dr. Abudu appealed to local authorities, traditional leaders, and community members to support vaccination efforts. “We need a collective effort to educate the public and enforce laws against unvaccinated pets roaming freely,” she said.
Nana Barnie Ahenkan II, Queen mother of Asuofia, highlighted the need for government support. “To achieve our goal, veterinary services require adequate funding, facilities, and resources,” she emphasized. “We must address these challenges to ensure the success of our rabies elimination efforts.”
Key Recommendations
1. Annual vaccination for dogs and cats
2. Public education and awareness campaigns
3. Enforcement of laws against unvaccinated pets
4. Increased funding and resources for veterinary services
5. Community involvement and cooperation
As Ghana strives to eliminate rabies by 2030, the importance of annual pet vaccination cannot be overstated. By working together, we can break the boundaries of rabies transmission and create a safer, healthier environment for all.
Observed annually on September 28, World Rabies Day raises awareness about rabies prevention and control. This global initiative aims to unite stakeholders in the fight against rabies.
