Christian Council of Ghana calls for total ban on illegal mining to protect nation’s future

Christian Council of Ghana has joined the growing chorus of voices calling for a decisive and comprehensive ban on illegal mining activities, commonly known as “galamsey.”

This appeal comes at a time when the destructive impact of illegal mining on the environment, local communities, and the nation’s future has reached alarming levels. The situation has prompted various stakeholders to demand immediate and significant actions to be taken against the practice.

Reverend Cyril Fayose, General Secretary of the Christian Council, emphasized the existential threat that galamsey poses to Ghana’s natural resources, particularly its water bodies, farmlands, and ecosystems.

Reverend Fayose underscored the urgency of addressing the crisis, stating that the menace must be tackled without further delay. He called for more than just the usual condemnations and reactive measures, insisting that only a well-planned and comprehensive strategy can safeguard Ghana’s future.

“I believe there should be a total ban, or at the very least, a moratorium on galamsey so that we can take a step back and carefully consider how to move forward. There are two possible approaches: a complete ban on small-scale mining, similar to the prohibition of mining in water bodies, or if a total ban is not feasible, ensuring that small-scale mining companies are community-owned,” Reverend Fayose suggested.
