Chief Justice Champions Court Automation for Efficient Justice Delivery

The Judicial Service of Ghana (JSG) has embarked on an ambitious court automation project. According to the Chief Justice, this initiative is designed to streamline court processes, reduce delays, and enhance the overall efficiency of the justice system.

The e-justice system, launched by the JSG, has already shown promising results. As of July 2024, a total of 71,781 High Court cases have been filed electronically, marking a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards a more efficient and effective justice system.

The automation of courts is another critical component of the project. Out of the total 468 courts in Ghana, 116 have been equipped with a direct transcription system, bringing the total number of automated courts to 228. This technological upgrade enables faster and more accurate transcription of court proceedings, reducing the likelihood of errors and delays.

The benefits of court automation are numerous. It enhances access to justice, particularly for marginalized communities, and reduces the physical barriers associated with traditional court processes. Additionally, automation improves case management, increases transparency, and saves time and resources.

The Chief Justice has emphasized the importance of technology in facilitating justice delivery. “Court automation is a critical step towards creating a more efficient and effective justice system,” he noted. “We are committed to leveraging technology to improve access to justice and reduce delays.”

While court automation holds immense promise, it also raises concerns about human rights, biases in AI decision-making, and the need for transparency and accountability. The JSG is working to address these challenges and ensure that the automation process is inclusive, transparent, and fair.
