Gospel singer Celestine Donkor has shared heartfelt memories of her challenging upbringing during the ‘Grass to Grace’ edition of Just Being Us. Growing up in a compound house with 11 neighbors, Celestine recalled her parents raising 15 children in a cramped hall and chamber.
In her conversation with MzGee, the ‘Agbebolo’ hitmaker fondly remembered the “miracle pot” her mother used to cook for the entire family. Despite their growing numbers, the same pot provided enough food for all, leading Celestine and her siblings to believe it held miraculous powers.
“It wasn’t easy for my parents to care for 15 children. We all had to eat from one pot, and we named it a ‘miracle pot’ because no matter how many we were, it was always enough for everyone,” she explained.
Celestine also reflected on her family’s financial struggles, revealing how her mother engaged in petty trading to make ends meet. She credited her mother’s hard work for keeping them fed, saying, “My mom did everything to make sure we were fed.”
Celestine’s early years were marked by sleeping on a couch in their chamber and hall, a setup she thought was normal. It wasn’t until later in life that she realized the luxury of having her own bed.
Her inspiring story highlights her journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of Ghana’s most celebrated gospel artists.
