The Carnival Spirit cruise ship collided with an iceberg while sailing in Tracy Arm Fjord, Alaska, last week. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the vessel sustained no damage.
According to a Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson, the ship hit “an errant piece of drifting ice” while navigating the waterway. Videos of the incident circulated on social media, showing the moment of impact.
Passengers described the vessel coming to a halt for several hours to assess potential damage. However, an assessment determined no damage to the ship’s hull, and the vessel continued its seven-day Alaska cruise without interruption.
This incident follows a similar occurrence in 2022, when the Norwegian Sun cruise ship hit an iceberg in Alaska, sustaining damage to its starboard bow. Alaska’s waters are known for their challenging navigation conditions, with strong winds, currents, and floating ice.
Despite these conditions, cruise experts emphasize that modern cruise ships are designed to withstand icy waters and have experienced captains familiar with the landscape. The Carnival Spirit has since embarked on another Alaska cruise, this time for 14 days.
