Bridge Collapse in China’s Shanxi Province Claims 12 Lives, 31 Missing

A devastating incident has occurred in China’s northern province of Shanxi, on Friday July 19, 2024 evening, where a bridge partially collapsed, resulting in significant loss of life and many more reported missing. According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, at least 12 people have lost their lives, and 31 others are still unaccounted for.

The bridge, which gave way after recent heavy rains and flash flooding in the area, has left a trail of destruction and chaos in its wake. Rescue efforts are currently underway, with a massive team of nearly 900 personnel, supported by 90 vehicles, 20 boats, and 41 drones, deployed to the scene. The search and rescue operations are focused on locating the missing individuals and providing aid to those affected.

The incident has sparked concern and outrage, with many questioning the structural integrity of the bridge and the measures in place to prevent such disasters. President Xi Jinping has responded to the tragedy, calling for comprehensive rescue operations and emphasizing the importance of flood management in the region.

This incident is the latest in a series of extreme weather events to hit China, which has been grappling with severe flooding in various regions. Just weeks ago, the country experienced drought conditions due to low rainfall and extreme heat, and now, heavy rains are causing devastation in provinces such as Gansu and Henan.

As the people of Shanxi and the rest of China come to terms with this tragedy, our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those affected.
