The Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reiterated that his current role as Vice President is to assist the president in implementing the president’s vision, emphasizing that his authority is limited in this capacity.
Responding to a question about why he isn’t implementing his vision now as Vice President, Dr. Bawumia clarified that his role is supportive, with the primary responsibility of carrying out the president’s agenda. He noted that as president, he would have full authority to implement his own policies.
To illustrate the limited role of a vice president, Dr. Bawumia pointed to the recent budget approved by Parliament. “The budget that was approved by Parliament went in the name of the president, so it is the president’s budget. It is not my budget,” he explained.
Dr. Bawumia further emphasized that his personal plans and vision will be fully implemented when he assumes the presidency. “That is why I have outlined my own plans and my own vision, which I can implement when I become President with full authority in three months, inshaa Allah.”
He also questioned the approach of former President John Mahama, asking why Mahama did not accomplish the initiatives he now promises during his time in office. “Why didn’t he do all those things he wants to come back and do when he was president? He had full authority as president and could have implemented those ideas.”
Dr. Bawumia concluded by highlighting the distinction between his current role and his potential future as president: “I have never been president before, and I have never had full authority before. That is why I have come up with my own new ideas.”
