Bawumia Challenges Mahama’s Northern Development Legacy

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), raised critical questions about former President John Mahama’s development record in the northern region of Ghana. Bawumia’s remarks have sparked a heated debate about the effectiveness of Mahama’s presidency in addressing the socio-economic challenges facing the north.

At the heart of Bawumia’s criticism is the perceived lack of significant projects initiated by Mahama in the northern region during his presidency. Bawumia challenged Mahama to point to tangible achievements, arguing that his own administration has delivered more substantial development projects in the region despite not being President.

One of the key areas Bawumia highlighted was the ineffectiveness of the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA), established by Mahama in 2010. SADA was touted as a flagship program aimed at accelerating development in the northern region, but Bawumia contended that it failed to deliver on its promises.

Furthermore, Bawumia accused the NDC of neglecting critical infrastructure development in the Upper West and Upper East Regions during their eight years in office. He emphasized that not a single major road was completed in these regions, exacerbating transportation challenges and hindering economic growth.

In contrast, Bawumia showcased his own development record as Vice President, highlighting achievements in roads, healthcare, education, and energy. He pointed to initiatives like the Sinohydro deal, which has led to the construction of critical roads and infrastructure projects across the country, including in the northern region.

Bawumia’s critique of Mahama’s northern development record raises essential questions about the effectiveness of past administrations in addressing regional disparities. As Ghana prepares for the 2024 elections, the debate surrounding development records and commitments to regional growth will undoubtedly continue to simmer.
