Bawku Conflict: Kusasis and Mamprusis domicile in Ashanti region sign peace accord

Kusasis and Mamprusis residing in the Ashanti region, have entered a peace accord aimed at averting a potential escalation of the Kusasi-Mamprusi conflict currently going on in Bawku, into the Ashanti region.

This mediation effort, initiated by the Ashanti Regional Security Council, was prompted by the recent shootings in Asawase, which resulted in the tragic loss of two lives.

The shooting incidents were attributed to the ongoing strife between the Kusasi and Mamprusi factions in Bawku.

A recent surge of violence in some parts of the Asokore-Mampong Municipality, including Asawase, had also culminated in the deaths of a local chief and a 60-year-old man.

Security sources have linked this turmoil to the protracted discord between the Kusaasi and Mamprusi groups in Bawku, which was gradually infiltrating into the Ashanti region, where these two tribes have significant population.

While the committee led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, continues its endeavours to foster enduring peace in Bawku, the Ashanti Regional Security Council is taking proactive measures to preempt clashes among migrants from the conflict zone.

Earlier, a seven-member mediation committee, comprising officials from various security agencies, convened separate meetings with both factions on Tuesday, September 8, 2025, before uniting them for a joint session on Thursday, September 11, 2025, which culminated in the signing of a peace pact at the Ashanti Regional Police Command.

The Head of Public Relations at the Ashanti Regional Police Command, DSP Godwin Ahianyo, elaborated on the process, noting that it was conducted in a congenial atmosphere.

He indicated that both factions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) stipulating their commitment to engage with their communities and keep them informed about the progress achieved.

Leaders from both the Kusaasi and Mamprusi groups in the Ashanti Region have pledged to uphold a spirit of peaceful coexistence and act as guardians for one another.

Tufeiru Amadu, the Ashanti Regional Vice Chairman of the Mamprusi Youth Association, and Naaba Winyellesom Ndeego, Chairman of the Kusasi Chiefs Association of the Ashanti Region, respectively articulated their dedication to ensure peaceful and harmonious coexistence in their communities.

Security officials have also implored the factions to provide timely intelligence to aid in the prevention of further violence.
