Parliamentary Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has expressed disappointment over Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to reject a request for an emergency recall of the House.
In a letter dated November 22, 2024, the majority leader and his parliamentary group proposed November 28 and 29 as possible recess dates to address urgent matters.
However, Speaker Bagbin said that parliamentary proceedings would remain suspended until the December 7 elections.
In response to the move, Afenyo-Markin accused the Speaker of treating Parliament as his personal property, expressing frustration over the impasse.
“And this is for my colleagues at the NDC. Watch the closing of Parliament. Today, the Speaker of the House has taken the Parliament as his personal property. When he wants, he opens the Parliament.
“Even when there is an issue on which he can sit with us, he says no. They created this stalemate.
“We [NPP lawmakers], as law-abiding citizens, took the case to court. The court ruled in our favor. We argued the issue and lost. We were waiting for the Speaker to open parliament as a Democrat and say that the work of government should continue.” “I was waiting for him to do it. He didn’t open parliament,” Afenyo-Mark told Joy News.
