The Accra Technical University auditorium on Tuesday witnessed a display of ingenuity as final-year students from the Fashion Design and Textile Department took the stage to showcase their creative designs.
The fashion exhibition is on the theme: “Promoting African Heritage: Our Pride, Our Passion”.
The exhibition showcased student work, including designs, crochet, batik, and tie-dye and footwear, alongside pieces from the School of Ordinance of the Ghana Armed Forces, affiliated with the university.
Dr Emma Donkor, the Head of Department, Fashion Design and Textiles, ATU, said the designs were done by the 419 graduating students of the department.
She said each student produced four outfits, but because of space we decided that each person had to display the best of their collection at the auditorium, and then the three others would be showcased on Friday, August 15, at the National Theatre for a fashion show.
She expressed satisfaction about the designs, saying, “So far so good. I think they have brought out their competencies and skills very well.”
Dr Donkor said, “Each student also comes out with their concepts, so everybody has what is in her mind he thinks he wants to depict when it comes to clothing, and that is exactly what you saw in there.”
She advised the students to take their profession seriously and be good entrepreneurs to improve their skills and competencies and fit into the world of work.
Dr Donkor urged the students to start from a humble beginning in their bedrooms before renting a more spacious office.
“The problem I have with our students is that most of the time they want to look for a fashion house.
“They dream about big things when they can even start from their bedroom,” she said.
Professor Amevi Akpokavi, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, ATU, commended the students for their innovative works, saying, “You are the real signatories to your creative designs.”
He said the designs were to communicate their best abilities, urging them to do their best and be mentioned among the giants in fashion design.
