Attack on EC offices – Commission demands arrest, prosecution of perpetrators

The Electoral Commission (EC) has asked the Police to investigate and arrest party supporters who vandalised state property at the Commission’s Greater Accra Regional Office, on Friday morning.

The EC also appealed to the Government to engage the Police to provide maximum security to guarantee the safe completion of the collation of results for the Ablekuma-North Constituency.

The Commission in a statement signed by Mr Samuel Tettey, Deputy EC Chair in charge of Operations, said some of the supporters also invaded its corporate office and issued threats to the staff of the Commission, who fled for their lives.

The statement said the party supporters vandalised the EC’s property, including louvre blades and furniture.

The Commission  said it had video footages of the attack to support the Police investigation.

The EC on Friday afternoon called off the planned continuation of the re-collation exercise for the Ablekuma-North Constituency after an attack on the proposed venue.

The re-collation was scheduled to resume at 0800 hours Friday at the Greater Accra Regional Office of the Commission.

The EC had planned to complete the results of three outstanding polling stations that could not be validated at the last re-collation exercise on January 8, 2025.

The Commission said it requested for adequate security to execute the task but the Police advised that the exercise be put on hold based on intelligence.

The EC said the Police did not augment security at its office premises, leading to the attack, adding that the threats to lives and property were unacceptable.

“We call on the Police to swiftly bring the perpetrators to book by identifying, arresting and prosecuting them. Video footages are available showing the faces of the perpetrators of these heinous acts,” it said.

The Ablekuma-North Constituency is the only constituency that does not have representation in the 9th Parliament.

Five successive attempts to re-collate the results for Ablekuma-North had been inconclusive as the EC was unable to complete the validation of results for some 62 polling stations whose original statement of results sheets could not be retrieved.

The National Democratic Congress has called for a re-run of the elections in the affected 62 polling stations, a proposal the EC has declined.

The New Patriotic Party on the other hand claims its candidate had won the seat by more than 300 votes per their independent collation.

At the last re-collation exercise, Mr Vincent Obeng, the Returning Officer for Ablekuma North, laid down his tools out of “frustration.”
