Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has called on professional bodies to join forces against illegal mining (galamsey), citing its devastating impact on Ghana’s environment and water bodies. He commended the Ghana Bar Association, Ghana Medical Association, and University Teachers Association of Ghana for their stance against galamsey and urged other influential groups to follow suit.
The Asantehene emphasized that galamsey poses a significant environmental threat, questioning the legal system’s response to pollution. He suggested that the Ghana Bar Association convene a panel to assess the crisis and deliberate on legal solutions.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II shared a personal experience witnessing the pollution of the River Pra, describing it as “embarrassing.” He stressed that collective action is necessary, saying, “To do nothing is no longer an option.”
The Asantehene’s remarks come as professional bodies intensify their opposition to galamsey, advocating for a ban on small-scale and illegal mining practices. His call to action underscores the need for a unified response to address the environmental emergency posed by galamsey.
