Andrés Iniesta has become co-owner of Danish third-tier club Helsingør, marking the Spanish legend’s first major off-field success since his retirement.
Helsingør has announced that NSN, the sports management and consultancy company co-founded by Iniesta, will take control with Swiss investment group Stoneweg. The club sits seventh in its 12-team division, from which it was relegated last season. According to the NSN website, the company worked with the club on a consultancy basis to “consolidate its position and provide opportunities for world-class talent to come and play in Europe”.
Iniesta played his last professional game for United Arab Emirates club Emirates Club in May and officially retired at the age of 40 in October. He has publicly pursued a coaching career and his involvement with Helsingør, a modest club that has failed to reach the top flight since it was formed following a five-club merger in 2005, will raise eyebrows.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to experience football in a different way,” Iniesta said in a statement on the club’s website.
